-
How do I commission a custom binding or enclosure?
Start by filling out the Bookbinding Contact Form or the Enclosures Contact Form on our site. Provide measurements, photos (if available), and a description of what you’re looking for. We’ll follow up to discuss design, materials, and pricing before work begins.
-
How long does a custom binding or enclosure take to complete?
Turnaround times vary depending on the complexity of the project and current queue. Most custom enclosures are completed within 3–6 weeks. Rush options may be available for an additional fee.
-
What materials do you use?
Each project is built using archival-quality materials: acid-free board, linen and cotton book cloth, leather, buffered cardstock and velvet linings, and marbled or handmade papers. Specific materials can be requested or recommended based on the project.
-
Can I request a specific cloth or paper?
Yes! We offer a curated range of cloths, leathers, and decorative papers. If you’re seeking something thematic or custom, we can help source it or design it for your project.
-
Do you offer repairs or restorations?
Yes. We offer conservation-minded book repair for bindings, boards, textblocks, and paper. All treatments are performed by Gerald Ward, a trained conservator with an MLIS focused on Preservation Administration and extensive postgraduate training in book and paper conservation. Gerald is a longstanding member of the American Institute for Conservation (AIC) and the Guild of Book Workers (GBW). Each repair is carefully assessed to ensure the most appropriate and least invasive treatment is applied, with a strong emphasis on preservation ethics and material integrity.
-
Can I send you a book directly?
Absolutely. Once a project is confirmed, you’ll receive shipping instructions. We recommend insured and trackable shipping both ways. Your book is carefully handled and stored while in our care.
-
Do you work with collectors, libraries, or publishers?
Yes, we regularly partner with private collectors, libraries, archives, and small publishers. Whether it’s a one-of-a-kind item or a short run of edition bindings or cases, we can help.
-
Do you make each enclosure by hand?
Yes. Every enclosure is handcrafted by Bibliopathologist using traditional binding techniques combined with thoughtful design.
-
Can you match an existing design?
In many cases, yes—especially for matching companion volumes. Exact replication may depend on available materials, but we aim for continuity and visual harmony.
-
How do I care for my custom enclosure or binding?
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and humidity. Avoid prolonged pressure or stacking. For detailed care guidelines, see our Book & Box Care Guide.
-
Do you accept returns or refunds?
Due to the custom nature of our work, returns are not accepted. However, if there is an issue with craftsmanship or quality, we will work with you to make it right.
