The Taken Vault: Archival Clamshell Box for The Black Company
There are books that tell stories. And then there are books that bear witness.
First conjured in 1984 and reborn in a gorgeous signed and numbered edition by Midworld Press, The Black Company is a chronicle of loyalty kept under oath and fire—of memory carved into shadows. This enclosure, The Taken Vault, is a hand-built clamshell box made to preserve that legacy. As the Company endures, so too should its tale.
Constructed from archival binder’s board and wrapped in medium gray linen cloth, the case evokes the Company’s shrouded neutrality—the smoke of dusk, the edge of a blade. The tray walls and spine insert are cloaked in black linen, a tribute to the name they carry and the veil they walk beneath. Inside, buffered archival black cardstock lines the trays to offer acid-free protection—quiet, structured, and absolute.
Both the spine and front cover feature recessed labels, custom-designed and printed on premium vellum photo paper, then sealed with archival acrylic for durability and spectral clarity. Their design reflects the spare, potent iconography of the Midworld Press edition, as if inked by the Annalist’s own hand.
This is more than a container. It is a ledger's last resting place. A vault for memory. A silence that remembers.
