Folded Books at Shelf Life

Come on out to Shelf Life for a class on folded book structures!

Books don’t necessarily require complex sewing structures and special tools. Sometimes, you just need paper, a bone folder, and your imagination. Structures such as the Accordion, the Flutter, and the Leporello can be accomplished with just paper folding, and sometimes a little glue as well. These bindings are great for artist’s books, keepsakes, gifts, birthday cards…the list goes on. This workshop covers several structures and variations.

Beginners welcome. All supplies included! Space is limited, so sign up today!

Secret Belgian Bookbinding with Gerald Ward

Shelf Life Art & Supply Co. - 2178 Lawndale Drive, Greensboro, NC 27408

Cost: $65 (supplies included). Click here to register on Eventbrite.

The Secret Belgian Binding, more formally known as the Criss-Cross Binding, is a non-adhesive book structure developed by Belgian bookbinder Anne Goy in the 80’s and is noted for its striking pattern of lacing the front and back covers to the spine. It is an excellent choice for sketchbooks and artist books since the pages lay flat. Additionally, much creativity can be shown through the choice of thread and covering material, resulting in bindings that are both visually interesting and incredibly versatile.

Registration includes the use of all necessary tools and the materials to construct two bindings along with instructions to take home. Paper and covering material will be provided as well, though Shelf Life has a great variety of materials and extends a 15% discount to students who are interested in purchasing their own.

*Ticket sales end one week before workshop date
